Women in IT

Why should someone care if there are less women in IT? Why should I care?

Fortunately and unfortunately, I was questioned by a man (in a good way) something like this. I said it is still fortunate because I was challenged to think. Unfortunate because I didn’t know what to answer. That surprised me really. Looking back in college I was told by my professor that I was a feminist. I didn’t believe her because I can’t just feel that I am. Maybe now that is one reason why I act like so. Then, I asked also another woman in IT why she’s doing what she is currently doing (she is an active member of Ubuntu-women) and that hardened some of my beliefs and answered some of my questions. I wouldn’t tackle much about her answer but basically one point on my end is to feel comfortable working in your flock. Men and women are still different the way they think and act and being on your own group sometimes brings out your true self. I do not like the idea of doing this because I just want to show men that as women I can also do what they can because we have our own talents and weaknesses. These things and our childhood experiences are ingredients that tells us what path we will take later on. I want women and other minorities to know that there is another option in choosing a work, not just the usual stuff like nursing, management, tourism, etc. This is millennium anyway, we are advancing in technology. Back in my highschool years, there was no option like that. I should thank my brother for showing this path because I am loving it! In my country, I think this is not only a concern about women, basically it is a concern for everyone, men, women, young and old but that is another issue. Some other “convincing” reasons will be tackled in a series of articles in oreilly.com written by Tatiana Apandi. There is already one that is out. Check it and see more.

I was tagged!

In response to this, I have to tell 8 things about me. Here they are.

  1. I am beautiful! (Don’t react if you don’t want me to slice your throat! :P )
  2. I am a programmer (duh! is it not obvious?) and a woman (duh again!)
  3. I want to be an architect or interior designer in the future. Any work related to houses and visiting UK would be a dream come true. I want to check the old castles and buildings there!
  4. Back in college, I used to like hiking. I would like to come back to that hobby of mine (I wish I have the time and money! Can you spare me some? )
  5. I’d like to become a better swimmer because right now, I cannot go further without any salbabida (tagalog term, something like a life jacket) :(
  6. I am always torn apart when I have to choose between cake and ice cream. Can I just have both? I’ll feel better though if I eat one of them with Donna.. hahaha (she doesn’t like sweets)
  7. I am afraid of heights, you know, I get a little dizzy when I look down from the 2nd floor and you feel like going down any minute. In spite of that, I want to experience hot air balloon and bungee jumping! I like to challenge myself.. hihihi..
  8. I always tend to lose or forget little things anytime, anywhere.. they call me matwa (Kapampangan term for ‘old’) for that.

Before I forget, I have to tell you the rules, otherwise they are going to call me rule-breaker. Here it is:

* You share 8 things that your readers don’t know about you then at the end, tag 8 other bloggers to keep the fun going. Each blogger must post these rules first.
* Each blogger starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
* At the end of the post, a blogger needs to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
* Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

I am tagging Tere, Kathy, Isabel, Lorna, Giselle, Cecille, Grace and Hannah.

Can you beat that? He’s only 7months old ;) I never imagined to expose my children to radiation at a young age but I can’t just resist seeing this picture over and over again.. He is soooo cute….

Goodbye & Hello

One of the days you’ll hate and you’ll love as well, saying goodbye and saying welcome back home! It is our last day today in the Cavite office where all my dreams started coming true.. For 2 years, I found a new family and a new life here. It’s so sad to leave them but I can’t hide the fact that I am also happy to finally go back where I grew. Life moves on …

Ofcourse, a farewell is not complete without some pictures to pack. My officemates had some little fun in Max where Carol almost kissed Piolo Pascual!

I don’t have a personality?

From this entry in lifehacker.org, the following really intrigues me:

Don’t worry about your personality. You don’t really have one. Personality, like ego, is a concept invented by your mind. It doesn’t exist in the real world. Personality is a word for the general impression that you give through your words and actions. If your personality isn’t likeable today, don’t worry. You can always change it, so long as you allow yourself to do so. What fixes someone’s personality in one place is a determined effort on their part—usually through continually telling themselves they’re this or that kind of person and acting on what they say. If you don’t like the way you are, make yourself different. You’re the only person who’s standing in your way.

huh? what does that mean? maybe I just should sleep first and read this tomorrow to get the idea. What do you think?

Buro – Kapampangan’s specialty

I’ve always known that in my blood lies the blood of a cook! Hehe.. dramatic, ain’t I? Seriously though, Kapampangans, people from Pampanga where I belong, have been known as excellent cook. I never know why until I found this article that drives us to Pampanga cuisine. Well, aside from the historical aspect of that article which is not the focus of this post, it also lists some of the best foods (and exotic too) that we always offer to strangers. My mood todays tells mo to tell you something about the famous and not too famous buro which my family and relatives, except me, loves! Buro is a fermented rice with fish or small shrimps (a.k.a. balo-balo, tag-ilo). Buro is a Tagalog word which also means preserved in salt, picled or salted. It is always served as an accompaniment for fried or grilled fish and some vegetables.

A detailed howto create a buro was written in this blog. Just scroll down a bit and check the pictures to see a glimpse of how they do it.

Below is the buro – the whitish one besides the fishes.

Buro and Fish

Picture from Flickr

I always ask my mom what is so good about it and always answer me with, ‘Try it to find out’. Maybe I will when I get a cold so I can’t smell it! Here is some info for you but I couldn’t agree nor disagree

How does it taste? It is slightly sour, delicately salty and unmistakably garlic-flavoured with an underlying taste of shrimp. How is it supposed to be eaten? Definitely not like how May-May eats it although some of my obsessed cousins have used it as sandwich filling. The proper way of eating it is with fresh mustard leaves, steamed vegetables and broiled fish. And how do the first-time eaters like it? The proof of the paste is in the taste…

Nowadays, they only not use the shrimp/fish to make a buro. I heard that the meat of pigs are also being used but they are called etak in Bagiou City. The counterpart of this food in Korea is the Kimchi and in Japan is the Sushi..

This is just one of those exotic food to look for if you come here. I’ll post another one, the Kamaro, which is I guess the least food I will ever eat ever! But it never really ceases to amaze me that my brother and others can really chew that thing.. more info in the future ;)

Overworked!

The faces of the overworked women..

Gheng and Sha

2007 version

So I warn you people, don’t let women get super stressed in work, you might regret what they will do after office hours ;) LOL .. I hope they won’t see this post, otherwise, they are going to kill me.. I better run for my life !!

Hello world!

As a custom, I just like to say hello world! Well this is not my first post. I’ve been blogging since April in wordpress.com and I felt the urge to have my own wordpress so I can do anything here.

About me

As I always describe myself to others, I am a woman who’s been attracted both to technology and arts. Since my logic is higher than my artistry, I became a programmer and now working as a web developer for more than 2 years. My not-so-artistic side still remains until now and that balances my life. I am hooked from time to time to check some magazines or blogs about cartoons, paintings, interior designs and architectures. Other than the two, I also like to engage myself to sports and the 2 things I have tried and really liked are hiking and badminton. I love travelling too. If given a chance (and I am working on that), I will travel my home country and then visit the others. I particularly like to go to Austria, Paris, Scotland, UK and northern China. And most likely, those topics are what your gonna see here. Actually, any topic that interests me shall be here, this is my galaxy now right?

About the design

Checkout the footer below for the credits. I really like the work of vikifloki and if your like me, I’ll bet your gonna love it too! Check them out, they are under the Creative Commons Licence. I’ll be creating new wordpress designs that’ll be open to the public when I get the chance so watch out for that!
